Civil Construction
At Calypso, we understand that jack-ups and jack-up operations in civil projects can take many shapes. There are lift boats, modular jack-ups, purpose-built construction jack-ups, mono-hulls and offshore jack-ups being used for civil projects. Also, the project locations are highly variable, ranging from offshore, to near-shore, to estuaries, to in-shore and upriver.
Because of the diversity in jack-up usage, it is all the more important to correctly apply rules to ensure safe operations. Most codes and standards apply to offshore operations and are not readily applicable throughout. Calypso seeks to apply those standards and parts of them that are most applicable to any specific operation. These include:
- ISO 19905-1:2023
- IJUBOA Guidance Note
- DNV RP-C104 (2022)
- Class requirements
- IMO Intact Stability (2008)
Services
Services include any assessment required for a jack-up to perform planned operations at any specific site. Our reports stand out through readability and clarity. Each report is directly suitable for use on-board and on-shore as well as for third party review and verification. A dedicated Captain’s summary provides a single page, tabulated and illustrated overview of any report.
A Site-Specific Assessment (SSA) determines the suitability of a jack-up to perform planned operations and to survive the extreme environment. The structural strength, overturning stability and foundation capacity are ensured to be sufficient. Deck layout, load eccentricities and effects of crane operations are included.
A Leg Penetration Analysis (LPA) is included in the SSA, but may be performed stand-alone if an SSA is not required. This could be the case when planned operations and survival are within design limits. The LPA presents the range of expected penetrations and provides hands-on preload guidance. It addresses any geotechnical risks with respect to installation of the unit.
Floating stability may have to be addressed for the specific deck layout. Sometimes it is required to determine the ballast plan for even keel and to comply with draft and stability requirements. A Stability Analysis report presents the ballast plan and loading condition. It indicates compliance with criteria such as IMO intact Stability.
Crawler crane operations
Many civil project include crawler crane operations. The crawler crane is positioned on deck, typically rolled on board from quayside. The crawler crane may be fixed at or near the center of the unit, but may also move around the deck. Calypso assists clients in specifying the required crane for the project, determining the limitations of the crane operations and determining the optimum location of the crane on deck. The determined crane operations and their effects are included in the SSA.
Tender support
A technically well-founded tender proposal helps securing projects and ensures that expectations are managed and aligned.
We support contractors in writing tender proposals and we deliver technical content, including uptime percentage estimates and weather limitations for planned operations. More and more tender proposals are supported by analysis reports.
We support equipment owners ensuring that their jack-ups are used within tolerances and specifications. Our assessments readily translate to hands-on requirements regarding operations and survival.
