A jack-up gradually increases pressure on her spudcans, first with the hull in the water, then with the hull just above the waterline. The pressure increase is called preloading or pre-driving. A leg Penetration Analysis (LPA) provides preloading guidance, indicates risks and shows the expected penetration resistance. Leg Extraction Analysis (LEA) determines risks and operational guidance for the opposite process. Calypso further provides detailed geotechnical risks assessment and support in case of punch-through events.
All Calypso engineers are trained and licensed to come on board and support jacking operations. Typical responsibilities include determination of workability, preparation of MOC documentation, guidance on jacking operations and stability and assessment of RPD. Calypso engineers on board maintain direct communication with the Calypso team to perform analysis on the fly.
